NIA NATIONWIDE SIMULTANEOUS TREE PLANTING ACTIVITY

July 05, 2024

Today, in commemoration of the National Irrigation Administration's 61st Anniversary under the theme "Sibol Para sa Patubig ni BayaNIAn 2024," NIA Region VII spearheaded a significant environmental initiative. Led by Regional Manager Engr. Rory F. Avance, 55 dedicated NIA employees, and 32 Irrigators Association Presidents came together for a Nationwide Simultaneous Tree Planting Activity.

The event, held on July 5, 2024, saw the planting of a substantial 5 hectares across strategic locations: 1.5 hectares in Brgy. Sikatuna, Talibon, another 1.5 hectares in Brgy. Lumangog, Ubay, and 2 hectares in Brgy. Aurora, Pilar. A total of 645 seedlings were carefully planted, reflecting a commitment to the agency's National Greening Program.

In Talibon, the focus was on planting fruit-bearing trees exclusively, while in Ubay and Pilar, a blend of fruit-bearing and high-quality lumber trees were meticulously placed into the ground. The variety of species included rambutan, lanzones, cacao, guyabano, pomelo, durian, and nangka, among others, enriching biodiversity and promoting sustainability in the region.

These trees are planted strategically to support the watershed of NIA Dams in the said areas. The seedlings planted are also from the Nursery of NIA under its Watershed Management Program, ensuring that they are well-suited to enhance the ecological balance and water conservation efforts crucial to the region's agricultural sustainability.

These efforts build upon previous tree-planting initiatives undertaken in 2021, 2022, and 2023, emphasizing continuity and enhancement through ongoing care, maintenance, and replacement of seedlings that did not survive.

The significance of such initiatives extends beyond ecological benefits, encompassing improved air quality and enhanced support for local wildlife. As such, NIA Region VII's proactive stance in environmental stewardship sets a commendable example, reinforcing the imperative of collective action towards a sustainable future.
